This paper will cover the design methodologies used in designing a data warehouse and the open source software available to bring it all together.

There are four sections to designing a data warehouse system.

• Analysis and reverse engineering of the source data
• Creation of the consolidation database and subsequent data marts
• Extraction from the source databases
• Reporting on the extracted data

We will cover each of these topics and give examples from experience.

We will also cover the business reasons for data warehousing, and why a semi-custom open source system is better than current closed-source data warehouse systems. A knowledge of relational database systems will help in understanding the technical aspects covered.
