A Database Money Can't Buy

You can use a *NIX file system and web-based interface to make an excellent database. You'll never be forced to "upgrade" to keep being supported. The API will never change out from under you, requiring you to rewrite your forms and customisations. Depending on your data's granularity, you may even be able to do things you could not do with a conventional, commercial database.
